Sri Krishna Janmashtami (Jayanthi)
Sri Krishna Janmashtami is observed through the evening building up to a midnight pooja marking the moment of Krishna's birth, usually accompanied by bhajans and, in many homes and temples, an Uyyala (cradle) ceremony for the deity.
We coordinate the evening's bhajana program, the midnight pooja itself, and prasadam for however many devotees are expected to stay through to midnight.
The evening typically opens with bhajans and storytelling from Krishna's life, building towards the sankalpam and abhishekam just before midnight. At the stroke of midnight, the deity (often in the form of Bala Krishna) is placed in a decorated cradle and gently rocked while devotees sing lullabies, followed by aarti and prasadam distribution.
